Journey Music Therapy KK
Journey Music Therapy KK has been offering services to the community in London, United Kingdom, since 2021 and will begin offering services in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia, starting in September 2025. Founded and led by Charisa Chen, an HCPC registered Music Therapist, Neurologic Music Therapist, and member of the British Association for Music Therapy (BAMT) and the European Music Therapy Confederation (EMTC), Journey Music Therapy provides personalised clinical music therapy services for individuals, groups, families, and communities, using music as a clinical intervention for psychological, emotional, cognitive, physical, and social-skill support, and as a tool for expression, communication, bonding, and growth.

Charisa offers a range of music therapy services, including in-person and online individual sessions, group sessions, and community outreach. She travels to clients’ homes, provides private sessions, and works with schools, clinics, centres for learning needs, hospitals, care homes, orphanages, and offers workshops. Charisa has an extensive background in working with children and young people with additional and special needs and is passionate about early intervention, believing that music encourages self-expression, builds confidence, and fosters healthy relationships.

With a Master’s degree in Music Therapy, specialised training in Neurologic Music Therapy, a Bachelor’s in Music Performance, and a diverse background as a musician, composer, piano accompanist, and former piano educator, Charisa brings a comprehensive and holistic approach to each music therapy session. Her expertise allows her to tailor therapeutic techniques to meet the unique needs of every client, ensuring personalised, beneficial, effective, empathetic, and compassionate care.

Charisa's goal is to bring awareness, growth, and support to the community in Malaysia while helping individuals with disabilities find their voice in today’s society through the power of music.

Hello! I’m Charisa, the founder and owner of Journey Music Therapy KK based in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia. I am an HCPC-registered Music Therapist and Neurologic Music Therapist with a deep passion for helping individuals of all ages and abilities discover their inner voice and harness the power of music for growth.

My professional journey spans over a decade, including 4 years as a private piano educator in New Zealand, where I nurtured young and adult musicians and cultivated their love for music. Following this, I spent 4 years learning and working as a Trainee Music Therapist and Qualified Music Therapist in London, United Kingdom, gaining invaluable experience supporting early years, adolescence, children, young people, and adults with autism, ADHD, global developmental delay, learning needs, sensory needs, cognitive needs, social and emotional needs, behavioural difficulties, attachment issues, mental health needs, adoption backgrounds, and physical disabilities.

At Journey Music Therapy KK, I bring together this rich, international and local experience to provide tailored, therapeutical, musical, and compassionate support to every client. I believe in creating a collaborative environment where individuals, families, and professionals can work together to achieve meaningful and beneficial progress. Through music therapy, I aim to empower individuals to express themselves, build confidence, and develop essential skills to navigate life’s challenges.
